The Playground, an initiative designed to blend technology, creativity, and play, has taken a bold step in shaping the future of Nigeria’s digital talent.
On December 28, 2023, the initiative hosted a groundbreaking event in Lagos, Nigeria, bringing together over 500 attendees for an immersive experience at the intersection of technology and play.
The event amassed support from partners like Pan African Towers, Nigeria’s largest Telecoms Tower alongside big brands like Pepsi, Mr Biggs, Dominos, Coldstone, and many more.
Speaking to the press, Oluwatofunmi Awodiji, the co-founder, The Playground, said that beyond the event, “The Playground has extended its impact by sponsoring 100 underserved teenagers in digital literacy, UI/UX design, website development, and entrepreneurship—ensuring they are equipped with skills to thrive in the evolving digital economy”.
Fostering Digital Talent Through Education
Recognizing the growing demand for skilled technology professionals, Awodiji said The Playground partnered with DreamCode Africa to create an educational initiative focused on digital literacy and entrepreneurship.
“This program provides young learners with hands-on experience in key areas such as user experience design, web development, and navigating the digital world—laying the foundation for careers in technology”, she said.
Through this sponsorship, curriculum development and active participation, 100 teenagers from underserved communities have gained access to structured training and mentorship, bridging the digital divide and preparing them to take advantage of future opportunities in the global tech ecosystem.
Addressing the Digital Literacy Gap
In the words of Awodiji: “Nigeria faces significant challenges in digital literacy. According to the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), there is a pressing need to prepare Nigerians to meet the challenges of inadequacies in digital literacy and skills acquisition.
“The Digital Literacy and Capacity Development department aims to transform Nigeria into a leading digital economy by providing quality life and digital skills for all. Initiatives like The Playground are crucial in addressing these challenges by equipping young individuals with the necessary skills to participate actively in the digital economy”.

She said that, by investing in youth education, The Playground is actively contributing to the development of a thriving technology ecosystem in Nigeria.
This initiative not only empowers the next generation of innovators but also fosters a pipeline of skilled talent that can drive economic growth and technological advancement in Africa.
