One industry where a candidate’s skills take precedence over an educational background is technology.

Skills are more important than education and occasionally even work experience in roles that are fast evolving in the computer industry.

This applies now more, considering the state of the educational sector in many African countries.

For instance, the Academic Staff Union of University (ASUU) strike in Nigeria which has had students majority of students in Nigeria at home for more than 200 days isn’t coming to an end anytime soon.

It is only advisable for these students to consider picking up tech skills or tech jobs to get sustained, as the majority of these roles do not require a college degree.

Cybersecurity Analyst

One of the most sought-after tech positions in any organization is cybersecurity. Companies all over the world are eager to hire cybersecurity specialists who can prove their expertise and reliability.

By using a variety of methods to identify and control cyber threats, cybersecurity analysts have the duty to safeguard an organization.

System/Data Analyst

The organization’s information systems and processes are designed and reorganized by system analysts. This professional’s primary concerns should be overall effectiveness and profitability.

This barely requires a college degree. You just need to be willing to pick up Excel, SQL, R, and Python skills and you are good to go.

Software Developer/Engineer

Software developers and engineers design, create and test applications and software for computers. Software engineers’ primary responsibilities and tasks include creating new programs and features, assessing system performance, and developing new software.

It’s a requirement for those interested in this career path to be proficient in at least one coding language.

Web Developer

Websites are developed and maintained by web developers. Website or interface layouts, navigation, and other features are developed, created, and tested for usability by digital designers.

Web developers have strong front-end development skills, and many are also familiar with the fundamentals of back-end programming.

The majority are proficient in JavaScript and at ease with a variety of content management systems. About 25% of job postings

IT Specialist & Help Desk Technicians

A company’s go-to personnel for providing technical support and assistance pertaining to computer systems, hardware, and software are help desk technicians.

They are in charge of promptly and professionally responding to inquiries and resolving system and user problems. They frequently contact system and computer users throughout the enterprise as members of the IT team.
