WhatsApp appears to be testing a new option for its Android app that would allow users to silence notifications from group messages that use the ‘@everyone’ mention.
The discovery, reported by WABetaInfo, reveals a new Mute @everyone toggle inside the notifications settings of a recent beta build, labelled 2.25.27.1. The control is off by default and must be manually switched.
The feature responds to an existing change that lets any group member, not just admins, ping everyone with a single mention.
That ability has proven useful for urgent alerts, but it also creates noise when overused. According to the leak, once enabled, the new setting will suppress the notification ping generated by an ‘@everyone’ mention while leaving the message itself in the chat.
Users will still be able to choose whether to receive those alerts even when a chat is muted, by changing the new option.
From a product viewpoint this is a sensible, low-friction privacy control. Large community and workplace chats often suffer from notification fatigue, and more granular controls let individuals tailor what demands their attention.

It also suggests WhatsApp is responding to real user pain points rather than only adding features that amplify volume.
A few practical notes: the functionality is client-side and still under development, so rollout timing is uncertain, and it may arrive first to beta testers.
The screenshots suggest that the option is positioned just below the existing mute toggle, making it easy for users to find.
We will be watch to see whether the setting appears on iOS and how it behaves in mixed-platform groups once it hits wider testing.
