Impact investor Vital Capital has injected growth capital into Vastpoint, a geospatial and land management firm working to modernise land ownership systems in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
This partnership aims to expand Vastpoint’s work with governments and communities, enhancing transparency, inclusivity, and efficiency in land administration while boosting property tax revenues.
Vastpoint’s technology combines advanced GIS tools with tailored land administration processes. Since its inception, the company has issued over 820,000 land titles, trained more than 20,000 local stakeholders, and directly impacted over three million people.
In a sector where women hold under 30% of land rights globally, more than half of Vastpoint’s titles list women as owners or co-owners, a significant step toward gender equity in property ownership.
According to the 2024 Prindex Report, nearly one in four adults across 108 countries feel insecure about their land rights, , a group that has grown by 239 million people in four years.
Secure tenure underpins outcomes ranging from food security to climate resilience, making land registration a foundational challenge in development.
Tamar Pashtan, Vital Capital’s Head of Impact, noted that without clear property rights, broader goals in poverty reduction and urban planning falter.
Vital’s managing partner, Nimrod Gerber, added that supporting a proven model like Vastpoint, one that moves from pilot to scale, aligns with their “build and re-build” approach, which de-risks early-stage projects and guides them toward market-rate returns and social impact.
Vital Capital first worked with Vastpoint on an initial pilot, helping refine the model before committing larger funds.
The new investment will finance the rollout of registration programs in additional low-income regions, aiming to bring first-time land ownership to millions more.
Our Take
Land rights often fly under the radar in tech coverage, yet they have ripple effects across finance, agriculture, and governance.
Vastpoint’s mix of mapping technology and community engagement shows that addressing tenure security demands both technical precision and local buy-in.
By focusing on proof-of-concept first and then scaling with strategic capital, Vital and Vastpoint illustrate a playbook that balances impact with financial sustainability, an approach I’ve seen gain traction among investors looking beyond quick returns to lasting development outcomes.
