Nigeria is in the news once again albeit, for the wrong reasons. Our lots and that of a few war ravaged countries are trending at the moment.
One hopes that hashtags such as #nigeriaisblessed or #biggesteconomyinafrica should be hot on social media but unfortunately #BringBackOurGirls and other related hashtags such as #ChibokGirls, #bringbackourdaughters, #bringourgirlsback are hot now.
Well, our prayer remains that the efforts of everyone both online and offline will yield the results of the girls being rescued.
Be that as it may, the focus of this piece is to look at the various ways social media can be used for social good. The ongoing campaign is the reason for the choice of our topic today and we ask, can anything good come out of social media?
Critics of the Internet and social media have argued that these platforms have caused and are still causing more harm than good. In many ways, I agree with their assertions to the extent that social media platforms can cause and indeed are causing some harm in the society.
The reason why I differ a bit is simply because I am of the opinion that public enlightenment and sensitization is important for citizens to be aware of other numerous good uses that these platforms are effectively capable of being put to. — Continue Reading
