More than 50 Ebonyi South Youths have received training on Information Communications Technology (ICT).
They are further equipped with new laptops and cash to set up business ventures, thereby reducing poverty. This initiative was overseen by Chief Michael Ama Nnachi, the Senator representing Ebonyi South.
There are 5 local government areas in Ebonyi South; Afikpo North, Afikpo South, Ivo, Ohaozara, and Onicha.
To maintain their reputation as the most enlightened and progressive residents of all the three senatorial zones of Ebonyi state, the representative at the senate, Senator Ama Nnachi trained over 50 youths across the zone on ICT.
The training took place at ICT centers, Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, PNoble Hotel, and Afikpo, Uwanna (AFPU)
It was held in conjunction with the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and DAISYGO CONCEPTS LTD.
Labelled ‘Capacity Building and Empowerment Programme’, the event was organised to empower the youths with basic computer knowledge, enhancing their productivity in this digital era.
Commenting on the intensive two-days training, Nnachi revealed that his motivation for the training stems from a desire to expose the youths to the ICT space, eliminating unemployment and poverty.
As the Vice-Chairman Senate Committee on Air Force, he described ICT as a veritable tool for increasing job opportunities for the youths.
He also implored them to embrace ICT to combat unemployment. He assured each participant would receive a laptop each, to enable them to begin their businesses after they complete their training.
He revealed that there are more empowerment programs planned for his constituents next year. He urged the trainees to make use of the knowledge acquired during the training to be productive.
“You have learned a few things in ICT. Yes, it might look as if they are the basics. Yes, without the basic foundation, you can’t go far. With the little you have learned, you can go back and teach others.
You are going to be given money to buy data. You can learn more about your laptops. There are a lot of free courses online. You can also do courses beyond ICT related courses using what you have been empowered with, today.”
Dr. Gideon Osi, GOC, the consultant in charge of the constituency projects of the Senator, also urged the beneficiaries to make full use of the training so as to create something productive out of it.
Remarking on the critical role ICT plays in diversifying the country’s economy and creating job opportunities, he said:
“But now, we’re in a computer age and some of us are graduates, when you graduate without ICT skills, it will be almost impossible to attain your peak.” Further, he added that the global economy is fast becoming digital.
“In the course of this training, we will hand over brand new laptops to all the participants that participated in the program”, he stated.
In addition, the representative of NITDA Engr Osy Stanley commented on tools trainers were exposed to. He said:
“The participants have been taught Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Powerpoint, and Corel draw. We’re in a new age.”
One of the participants, Ogbonna Chikaodiri from Onicha LGA, expressed his gratitude for the good gesture of Senator Nnachi, convinced that the training would go a long way in getting the youth employed.
“People have this belief that once a man is in a political position, his family comes first but in the case of our Senator, it’s totally different. He is carrying everybody along, not minding the part you come from. It’s applause to him and the first time we’re seeing that.”, he said.
Another trainee, Arua Chinonso from Ivo Local Government commended Nnachi for the training and donation of a free laptop too.
He promised to put into practice what he was thought at the training which he said will go a long way in making him self-reliant.
“I sincerely want to thank our amiable Senator Michael Nnachi for this great engagement that he brought. Each and every one of us from Ebonyi South and we, from Ivo.
We want to sincerely say that we’re happy and we appreciate this effort and we promise that we will definitely stand by him in all his endeavors in this our constituency,” he said.
Other Ebonyi South youths who participated in the training showed their appreciation to the Senator include Mr. Ginikachi Nnachi, Mgbom Youth Leader, Onyiba Ude Ajanwachukwu from Ohaozara LGA, Afikpo, and Agha Ogonnaya from Afikpo North.
