A strong woman knows she has the strength for the journey, but she also knows that she will get stronger during the journey.
Many women have shattered the glass ceiling in various industries; many women have also succeeded in not only breaking into the tech business but also leading important tech projects and companies.
One of these women is Ugochi Ugbomeh. She’s worked in the tech business for over ten years, and she began by teaching herself what she knows about technology while studying Geology at the University of Ghana.
Ugochi has consistently pursued a profession in technology after receiving a Master’s degree in Information Technology from the University of Glasgow in 2011.
As a woman who has succeeded in tech for a long period and has achieved a lot. She is an IT consultant for multiple companies, works as the COO of NativeTalk and Tech4mation, Co-Founder of Eykegai.
In the past, she has worked as a developer, operations consultant, business manager, resource planner, data analyst, general manager, and co-founder of the first e-hailing and delivery platform in Nigeria (Tranzit).
In order to address the Nigerian mobility sector, she founded Tranzit one of her major projects. Tranzit is a global transportation company. Ugochi specializes in web development, project management, workforce management, business analysis, customer relationship management (CRM), business strategy, IT operations, e-commerce, software development, and IT management, among other things.
So far, her tech path has been as follows: She was the co-founder and general manager of Tranzit Nigeria, as well as the head of information technology operations at Michrosys Technologies and a Realtime-Analyst at Teleperformance. Now she is the COO of NativeTalkNG ( Nigeria’s favorite business hotline for entrepreneurs) and also the Co-Founder of Eykegai ( a tech company that builds enterprise solutions for businesses).
As the globe celebrates International Women’s Day, Ugochi Ugbomeh speaks with Techbuild Africa about her motivations and values, here is what she has to say:
Techbuild: How did you get into the tech space and what is your drive?
Ugochi: It was something I always wanted to do, I started teaching myself when I was studying Geology at the University of Ghana in 2005.
Techbuild: What does breaking the bias mean to you, in regards to your career path?
Ugochi: For me, it will be more allocation for women. making them equal, I think it should cut across all career paths, women should be assessed based on their experience and not based on their gender. I think when this is done, we are somewhat of breaking the bias. At least it’s a step in the right direction.
Techbuild: What should be done to better position women & girls for opportunities in Africa’s tech ecosystem? And how can you contribute?
Ugochi: Create more awareness around tech for women, from a very young age. When people see coding for instance with so many numbers, logic people think that’s all there is to teach and assume it is difficult, but a product manager may not know anything about coding but can tell you how to build and design a viable product. So there should be more awareness around tech for women. Tech has many facets.
Tedchbuild: Advice to women that want to get into the tech space
Ugochi: There are challenges, look at where your skills lie and align them with opportunities in the tech space. Never stop learning! You have to start from somewhere. I stopped looking at men as my competition but as humans. I don’t compete with anyone but the former version of myself. It took a lot to get here. Women need to be more confident and put themselves out there. We are smart, assertive, and unique!
