Applications are open for the Google.org Impact Challenge: AI for Government Innovation 2026, a global funding and support initiative aimed at expanding the use of artificial intelligence in public service delivery.

This call invites mission-driven organisations that are already working with government partners to propose AI-based solutions that can improve how essential services are planned, accessed and delivered to citizens. The application period runs until 3 April 2026.

Thematic Areas

The call seeks proposals that apply generative or agent-based AI to areas such as:

  • Improving health service delivery and accessibility.
  • Strengthening systems for resilience, disaster response and community services.
  • Supporting economic infrastructure and public resource management.

Organisations can also propose related applications where AI contributes significantly to service quality or efficiency with measurable results.

Benefits of Participation

This programme offers a share of $30 million in grant funding for selected organisations, with individual awards typically ranging between $1 million and $3 million.

These funds are intended to help teams move past pilot stages and support wider deployment of AI solutions that address public-sector challenges.

Alongside financial support, selected teams are invited to join the Google.org Accelerator, a multi-month support process that provides:

  • Mentorship and technical guidance from Google’s AI experts.
  • Pro bono technical support to help with responsible AI adoption and implementation.
  • Access to cloud infrastructure and advanced tools to build, test and scale AI systems.

This blended support is designed to help organisations refine their strategy and operational approach while building capacity for long-term impact.

Eligibility for Participation

Eligible applicants include nonprofit organisations, social enterprises and academic or research institutions that are partnering with government entities at national, regional or local levels.

The partnership with a public sector body must be demonstrable, with a clear plan for integrating the solution into existing services.

Projects should outline measurable outcomes that reflect improvements in public service reach and effectiveness.

Criteria for Participation

To prepare a strong proposal, teams should clearly describe:

  • How the AI solution will be used to address a real public-service issue.
  • Evidence of commitment and buy-in from government partners.
  • A feasible implementation plan with measurable success indicators.
  • How can the project be expanded beyond an initial pilot to benefit larger populations?
How to Apply

Organisations applying AI tools to public service challenges can begin their applications on the Google Impact Challenge portal. The submission deadline is Friday, April 3, 2026.
