Gamers and creative professionals got excited as AMD announced world’s first commercially available 5 GHZ processor. The chip is based on Piledriver architecture. It is known as FX-9590 and features four PileDriver modules roughly translating into 8 cores.
The chip runs at a base frequency of 3 GHZ and goes up to 5 GHZ when stressed. For those, who even 5 GHZ isn’t enough, they can also over overlock it and stress it further, but AMD takes no responsibility if one fries the chip. Although 5 GHZ is not the processor’s core speed, it can still cross the whopping 5 GHZ mark which is an achievement in itself.
The chip is being advertised by AMD as an ultimate gaming companion and is a Socket AM3+ processor. The processor is expected to eat up a lot of energy, something near 200W. The main question in a geek’s mind is whether it is really worth it. Many believe there is not much benefit in totally relying on the GHZ’s. It totally depends on what the user need to get out of the CPU and if it is not about heavy video editing, many believe Intel is a better option if the price is considered.
