Just as scientists can boast of having an official language which they use to communicate amongst themselves, the social media also has its official language.

These days while surfing the net, one would find so many abbreviations; imagine the stress of having to keep racking your brain trying to figure out what they mean. Here is a list of acronyms just to aid you.

1. WCW: This is an acronym that means “Woman Crush Wednesday.” It’s a popular hashtag that began on Twitter as a way to tag posts about women that people admire or find attractive. It then spread to other social networks like Instagram and Facebook. So on Wednesdays, the social media gets you picking one out of the many women in your life, the post of picture or pictures of her and probably tell people why you love her.

2. MCM: Just like WCW, this is the male version. Man Crush Monday, is when you post a picture or comment on a particular male who you find attractive, could be a crush from school, friend or celebrity.

3. TGIF: “Thank God it’s Friday” everyone loves the weekends, and we can’t help but scream “TGIF” with happiness for the freedom of two days.

4. HBD: Just in case you didn’t know this, it means merely happy birthday most persons get too lazy to type the full word. Instead, they just go “HBD.”

5. TBT: Throw Back Thursday is the name of a weekly social media posting trend and hashtag game that people from all over the world use online to share and look back fondly on some of their favorite memories. The “throwback” component of a post can apply to almost anything that happened in the past. So on Thursdays, anyone can participate in the Throwback Thursday trend by posting content (usually a photo) on social networking sites like Instagram, Twitter, or Facebook to reminisce about a past event.

6. DM: Direct Message is a messaging function in Twitter that allows a user to send a private message to a specific user. Unlike the usual tweets that can be seen by all the user’s followers, a direct letter can only be read by its recipient.

7. FBF: Flash-Back Friday just like the TBT, social media users, bloggers, and even brands will post some type of content like a photo, a video or a song from the past and then they’ll tag it with #flashbackfriday or #FBF if they’re posting it on a Friday.

8. PDA: Public Display of Affection is the act of two people indulging in an intimate act in public. It could be pretty much anything that displays affection between two people. But when one uses the term “public display of affection,” it’s usually considered to be an act that is somewhat physical.

9. CTA: Call to action. This is the part of a marketing message that attempts to persuade a person to perform the desired effect. A call to action aims to convince a visitor to act immediately. “Buy Now!” and “Register Today!” are some typical examples. The call to action is intended to improve the market’s response rate to the advert copy, as its absence may cause a visitor to forget about the advert and move on to other things.

10. RT: Retweet is a re-posting of a Tweet. Twitter’s Retweet feature helps you and others quickly share that Tweet with all of your followers. You can Retweet your Tweets or Tweets from someone else. Sometimes people type “RT ” at the beginning of a Tweet to indicate that they are re-posting someone else’s content.
