WordPress powers millions of websites across the world today and what makes it hugely popular is the fact that there are millions of plugins that you can use to make your website as distinct and dynamic as you want.

The companies, whose websites the hackers compromised, were built on the wordpress framework. These hackers exploited some vulnerabilities they found on the websites, hence, there is the need for you to improve on your online safety.

Wordfence, a top wordpress security company, released a report stating that the vulnerabilities may have been found from two wordpress plugins known as Revolution Slider and ALO EasyMail Newsletter.

Interestingly, Revolution slider costs $19 and ALO Easymail is Free – in other words these basic wordpress plugins have led to an embarrassing situation for many people around the world with he Panama Papers breach.

What, then, are the lessons here, you may ask? These are simply;

a. Note that no one is safe online, so it is best for individuals and businesses to take the security of their data much more seriously.

b. For the millions of wordpress users, the rule is to simply keep your WordPress software, plugins and themes current. In other words, you need to keep upgrading from time to time.

c. Do not use out-dated plugins for any reason.

d. Finally, it may not be a smart idea to host your email and website on the same server. Separating them might be a much safer strategy.

Those are some of the strategies that you should adopt to better secure your web properties.
