The STEAMHer Series, a monthly STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Maths) training program for secondary schools has taken-off in Lagos.
This is an initiative of the United Nations Information Centre – Lagos (UNIC-Lagos) in conjunction with the Women’s Technology Empowerment Centre (W.TEC).
The main objective of this program is to bridge the gender gap in STEAM in Lagos schools. Sessions of the programme will be held once a month for girls at the UNIC – Ikoyi office in Lagos.
Experienced tutors and professions will be involved in the coaching of the schoolgirls towards having a better understanding of STEAM.
The launch of the program was held Wednesday, October 30th at the UNIC office. The program was officiated by officials of UNIC, W.TEC and Lafarge Africa Plc.
The beautiful event had in attendance 100 girls from eight secondary schools, from Districts 3 – (Lagos – Ministry of Education) who were treated to career talks, inspirational sessions and a break out mentoring session anchored by female engineers from Lafarge.
The Executive Director of W.TEC, Oreoluwa Lesi, in her opening remarks stated that the STEAMHer Series will provide young schoolgirls with sufficient information on career options in science, technology, engineering, arts & maths which in the long run will help them make the right career decisions and bridge the gender gap in science and technology in Nigeria.
The Officer in Charge UNIC – Lagos, Oluseyi Soremekun in his welcome remarks urged young girls to stand up against stereotypes that stigmatize them as incompetent in science subjects.
The Communications, Public Affairs & Sustainable Development Director, Lafarge Africa Plc, Folashade Ambrose-Medebem in her Keynote Address: ‘’Girls Take Your Place in Science & Technology” urged girls to not be discouraged but they must be inspired to achieve anything they wish to become by working hard and not compromising their values.
Furthermore, the program is planned to run monthly for a year during which over 1000 girls will be empowered with the latest STEAM information and education to guaranty them the ability to take better advantage of opportunities STEAM will offer them in the future.
