In 2019, the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, under the leadership of Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, flagged off some major projects, one of which was focused, on implementing the Emergency Communications Centre, ECC, project.

The Commission, not only activated, but increased the number of ECC, in operations, across the country, to 18. 17 were activated in the following States: Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Benue, Cross Rivers, Edo, Ekiti, Enugu, Imo, Kaduna, Katsina, Kano, Kwara, Ogun, Ondo, Oyo and Plateau. One was, also, activated in the Federal Capital, FCT, Abuja.

After the implementation of these centres, both the National Emergency Toll-Free Number “112” and the Katsina State Emergency Communication Centre, for the North West Zone, were commissioned, successfully, on Monday, September 23, 2019.

According to the Commission, however, arrangements are ongoing, for the commissioning and launching, of these same centres, in the other 5 geopolitical zones, and the FCT and there will, also, be publicity and enlightenment that would, officially, announce these centres.

These commendable efforts, by the Commission in 2019, did not go unnoticed, as Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, EVC/NCC, was recognized, as Nigeria’s Goodwill Ambassador, in Security and Emergency Management. NCC, as a corporate body, was not left out, as the Commission, bagged the award of Corporate Social Responsibility, (CSR), in Security and Emergency Management.

The awards were received, in early December, 2019, at the maiden Security and Emergency Management Awards. The awards, was hosted by the Emergency Digest, a publication of Image Merchants Promotion Limited, in conjunction with, the Centre for Crisis Communication.

In other efforts, by the NCC to implement the ECC Project, the Commission did not relent, in its efforts, to clean Nigeria’s SIM database, all, in an effort, to boost the federal government’s initiative, in driving an increase, for the security of lives and property.

In the year in view, more than 24 million registered subscribers, who are deemed invalid, as indicated, from their records, were scrubbed, (deduplicated), by the Commission, through Automated Fingerprint Identification System, AFIS.

This is, in fulfillment, of the Commission’s mandate, in establishing a credible database of telephone subscribers.
