Inadequate power supply and incessant attacks on telecommunications infrastructure, such as cutting down of fibre and cables are some of the reasons consumers experience poor telecom services in Nigeria, Nigerian Telecom Regulator said.
The NCC Executive Vice Chairman, Umar Danbatta said, these were some of the reasons for poor quality of services in the country,
The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) had condemned recently the unwarranted attacks on telecommunications infrastructure which affect the quality of service in Nigeria.
“Though the drop call rates are not acceptable, findings by the Commission showed that fibre cuts and sabotage were largely responsible for the poor quality” NCC boss argued.
According to Danbatta, the supply of electricity is also closely tied to the quality of service as all the network operators depend on electric power.

“Athough network operators do generate energy themselves, they still have diesel challenges most of the time”
He, however, charged network operators to scout for alternative means of powering their base stations.
According to Association of Telecommunication Companies of Nigeria (ATCON), telecom subscribers in Nigeria loose an average of N730 billion annually to poor quality of service.
“If we have steady power supply from the mainstream, the Telecom operators could easily connect their networks directly to the national grid as it is done in other countries”, ATCOM said.
