Project management is simply the management of business projects.
A business project is that, which is classified by content and purpose, to achieve a particular business objective and are aligned with a company’s business strategy.
This is where the project business management comes into business.
Project management is very essential in every business to keep a note of, not just start and end dates, but to keep track of project progress and tasks assigned, to each individual.
Most people do not see it as anything of importance, but rather an unnecessary task that is just put on paper Project management is much more than that misconception.
Running a project, without good management is, running at a loss. Project management is what holds the team and client together, navigates the ups and downs, clashes and catastrophes of projects.
It keeps things in check – on time delivery, scope and budget. It also creates a vision for a successful project, unites clients and teams, gets everyone on track on what is needed, to stay on track for success.
When projects are managed properly, there is always a positive impact in the process, progress and outcome of the project.
Aside from the benefits of project management as stated above, some other importance include the following:
- It maximizes resources and controls and cost – Resources are expensive, whether financial or human, therefore, by enforcing project management, all resources are ensured to get used efficiently, effectively and economically.
- Some projects do cost significant amount of money, but using the techniques reduces the risk of budget overruns.
- It is important, as it brings leadership and drives direction in projects. Without project management, it would simply be a team, moving without direction. With this, there is no confusion on who is accountable for whatever tasks that are assigned.
- With it, there will be clear focus and objectives. It ensures that well thought out plans are put in place, for executing the strategies to achieve the goals.
- It takes care of realistic project planning, ensuring proper expectations are set on what can be delivered, when and how it can be delivered, as well as contacts to be made, with budgets.
- Project management ensures the quality of what is getting delivered – not just the time and what is to get delivered, but the output, which gets tested for quality and standard.
- It also ensures that the right people do the right things, at the right time, as assigned, ensuring that the right processes are followed, throughout the project life cycle.
- Project management has a subject matter expertise – understands what the project is all about and understands the team, their work and ensures that they are doing what they should be doing.
- It learns from successes and failures, as well as ensures that the organization learns from it as well – breaking bad habits and ensuring that the same mistakes are not made twice.
It takes charge of post-project reviews, considering what went well and what did not.
Ensuring the right output gets delivered, with happy, united and motivated team and happy clients.
