Apple has been aggressively advertising its iPhone 6 and 6S as their biggest “S” upgrade with all new 3D-touch displays, enhanced Touch ID, more powerful A9 processors and better cameras. Are these, however, really the features that are worth spending hundreds of Naira on for an upgrade? The loyal Apple fans with a lot of cash-in-hand will not probably think twice about it and will go for the upgrade. For others, it is a matter of being logically convinced to carry out the upgrade.
Both iPhone 6 and 6S look identical from the outside except that for the fact that the 6S is made of aerospace-grade aluminum providing more durability at an extra 14g weight. 6S features 64-bit A9 processor compared to 1.4 Ghz A8 processor of iPhone 6. Let’s compare the main changes Apple made in their new phone:
Cameras
iPhone 6 8MP/1.2MP vs 6S’s 12MP/5MP
Both rear and front cameras have been updated with more megapixels translating into more details in captured images. Those who use their phone as primary means of viewing photos will not notice any significant difference. The difference, (not so huge), can only be spotted when the photos are viewed on big screens and monitors. Selfies taken from the front camera are noticeably better, even if you view them on the phone, so if you are a selfie-addict, here is something that might interest you.
Live Photos
Live Photos enable you to see live moments before and after a picture was shot. This feature actually brings life to viewing photos as they are no more frozen pictures. But do you know that this is not entirely a new feature? HTC featured the same concept in its One series phones called “Zoe”, but Apple came up with a refined version of the concept. If you think this feature is worth spending money on, then, go for it.
3D Touch
3D Touch is another feature being hyped and enables the phone to detect varying levels of pressure, but we do not have many apps available to utilize this feature. This is quite similar to the Huawei’s Mate S concept of force sensitive display. 3D touch means apps will be able to perform different functions according to the user’s touch pressure. Many believe that it does not really save time when interacting with apps and it is just another marketing gimmick and a fun thing to do. For some, however, it means a lot and they believe that the future apps will enable users to take full benefit of the feature.
Conclusion
For those who want to upgrade from iPhone 5S or earlier, jumping straight to the iPhone 6S is a good option. On the other hand, most of the iPhone 6 users may not find 6S compelling enough to spend their hard-earned cash on. Existing iPhone 6 users will not be missing much if they stay with their phones.
