The Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) contributions in the war against insecurity in the country have won the commission a global endorsement as it recently received two prestigious international awards.

In recognition of its well-coordinated emergency number, 112, and the construction of Emergency Communications Centers (ECCs) across the country with 19 states already operational and an additional 5, ready for activation, the NCC was presented the International Public Relations Association (IPRA) Golden World Awards (GWA) 2020.

Understandably, the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the presentation of the IPRA Golden Global Awards (GGA) 2020 to the commission which had been set to hold earlier this year in Germany.

For its efforts in deploying the emergency communication centers for national security, the NCC also received the African Public Relations Association’s (APRA) Certificate of Excellence.

At the Security and Emergency Management Award (SAEMA) 2020 ceremony, the NCC  was pronounced winner of the Emergency Management Security and Emergency Management Award.

The much-coveted trophies, which included a Certificate of Excellence for Outstanding Accomplishments in Category of Emergency Management, were then presented by Malam Mukhtar Sirajo, the President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) to Dr. Ikechukwu, the Director, Public Affairs of the Commission.

The NIPR President lauded the NCC for a culture of professionalism in the management of its corporate communications and public relations arm. This, he acknowledged is what has enabled the commission to maintain its corporate image as well as qualify it for prestigious awards it has won over the years.

For instance, at the maiden edition in 2019, Prof Umar Garba Danbatta, the NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman and the Chief Executive Officer, was recognized as ‘Nigeria’s Goodwill Ambassador for Security and Emergency Management in Nigeria.’

On the other hand, the NCC, as a corporate organization, was given the ‘Corporate Social responsibility Award in Security and Emergency Management in the country.’

In attendance at this year’s award-giving event was Malam Yusheu Shuaibu of Image Merchants Promotion Limited who commended the NCC for launching an impressive campaign on its emergency communications project.

“The ECCs were activated as a one-stop-shop for receiving distress calls from the public and dispatching same to appropriate Emergency Response Agencies (ERAs) for timely response and resolution of the distress.”

He further explained that prior to the new management under the aegis of Danbatta, the ECC project had been in a state of inactivity.  According to Malam Shuaibu, the leadership of the EVC occasioned the construction and operationalization of the ECCs across all states in Nigeria, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
