In continuation of the drive in te telecom industry, towards achieving a digital economy regime in Nigeria, spearheaded by the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy, the regulatory body of the telecom industry in Nigeria, the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, has granted approval to MTN Nigeria Plc, to commence the trial of e-SIM services on MTN networks.

In announcing this development, MTN explained that, e-SIMs are the next step in the evolution of Subscriber Identity Modules, (SIM cards), designed to deliver unprecedented freedom and flexibility.

Unlike the physical SIMs, e-SIMs are built into smartphones, devices and wearables.

They support multiple profiles and allow customers to connect multiple numbers, to their e-SIM devices.

Subscribers that will be opting for the e-SIMs will, however, still need to go through the process of SIM registration in line with existing regulatory prescriptions, before activating a device embedded with an e-SIM, just like it will be done for physical SIM.

People who want to manage personal and business lines easily and effectively, or are seeking a separate profile for data, will find e-SIMs useful.

Another set of beneficiaries will be travelers and tourists, as they will now have the opportunity of opting for and keeping a local subscription easily, when visiting Nigeria.

The MTN e-SIM trial, which kicked-off on Wednesday, July 15, 2020, will run for one year and it is open, on a first come first served basis, to a limited number of subscribers who own compatible devices.

“We are in a fast-paced digital age with new technological advancements, driving the constantly changing landscape.

Against this backdrop, customers depend on us, to provide high quality, reliable and easy-to-use connectivity solutions”, expressed Mazen Mroue, Chief Operating Officer, MTN Nigeria.

“With the introduction of the e-SIM, we will offer customers a seamless and distinctive digital experience, with new levels of flexibility, simplicity and convenience.

This is a further demonstration of our firm commitment to delivering the benefits of a bold new digital world, to our customers; and we will continue seeking new ways, to provide solutions that address old and new challenges, making life a little easier and brighter”,  Mazen Mroue concluded.

For all MTN mobile subscribers who own e-SIM compatible devices, steps for setting up an e-SIM profile, with a new, or existing mobile plan is quick and easy.

What it takes is to pay a visit to an MTN Service Centre, where frontline staff will assist in registration and onboarding, at no cost to the subscriber.

In the foreseeable future, e-SIM users will, also, be able to link multiple compatible devices and smart wearables, such as tablets, smartwatches, etc., to their profile.
