Moodle stands for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment.

It is a secure, customizable and user-friendly open-source learning management system (LMS) that was founded in 2002 by Martin Dougiamas, and is designed to provide educators, administrators, and learners across the globe with an open, robust, secure, free and customizable platform that will enable them create and deliver personalized learning environments.

Moodle LMS offers educators across board functional, flexible, and interoperable digital learning solutions through its open-source technology.

Open-source technology gives educators full access to their Moodle site’s code and allows them to create a learning solution tailored to meeting their specific learning needs through tailored content, third-party tools, e-learning best practices and innovative plugins.

Moodle’s MOOCs (massive open online courses) are free or low-cost online courses that provide learners a flexible way to learn new skills, advance their careers and deliver quality educational experiences at a scale.

Its modular nature and inherent flexibility make it an ideal platform for both academic and enterprise-level applications of any size.

Benefits of using Moodle LMS
  • It has a powerful set of tools that empowers learners and educators alike
  • It has been adapted for use across several sectors because of its flexibility and scalability
  • You can either host it yourself or use a Moodle provider for hosting and support
  • It has a simple user interface for educators and learners to use
  • It is available in web and mobile versions and the mobile version is available for both Apple iOS and Android-based devices
  • It is translated into many languages for easy understanding and use
  • Its modular and suitable design allows developers to build plugins that can combine external applications to improve system capabilities
  • It allows you learn at your convenience with access to course content e.g. images, videos, and other files anywhere, anytime
  • It is interactive e.g. users can receive notifications, send messages, take tests, participate in discussions, etc.

The role of technology continues to advance in our society. There is a need to leverage a flexible Learning Management System like Moodle to meet the needs of educators and learners in simplifying the learning and teaching process.
