Lastpass + Google Authenticator: Rock Solid Online Protection
Security is essential online and let’s face it no one, absolutely no one is 100% immune from attacks and there are countless ways one can fall victim to these attacks. But did you know weak passwords are common reasons why accounts easily get compromised online?
Luckily for me, I have been using lastpass premium for the last couple of years, like most services online, it has both free and paid versions that will serve your needs. Think about the hundreds and in my case the thousands of password you have to deal with and then you would appreciate a service that helps you manage the entire process.
Note: GA can be used by both free and premium password users so share in order to improve online security.
Why add Google Authenticator (GA) to Lastpass?
GA is a service from Google that allows you to protect your account by providing another layer of security that further links your account to your mobile phone or email address (in certain cases) where a code will be sent for you to access your account each time you want to login (depending on your settings). Although, Lastpass provides security, it is possible for someone to steal your master password using keyloggers and without a 2 step authentication process, they would have a field day with the accounts in Lastpass vault.
How to set up Google Authenticator for LastPass?
To set up Google Authenticator for multi-factor authentication with LastPass, go to your LastPass Vault > Account Settings > Google Authenticator, and follow the instructions found there. You’ll need to have your mobile device on hand to set up Authenticator, as you will need to scan a code from your computer screen.
Now, if you are like me that uses Google Authenticator for both my LastPass and Gmail account then be aware that you need to take extra precaution just in case you lose your phone or mobile device, it could be tricky to get back into your account. If you choose to use Google Authenticator for LastPass and Gmail, you may want to set a LastPass security email (Account Settings > Security) that you can access without the use of LastPass or Google Authenticator. This ensures that you can have LastPass send you an e-mail to disable Google Authenticator should you lose your phone.
