Filecoin Orbit Nigeria hosted a workshop and hackathon session on Saturday, March 23, 2024, at NITDA Hub, University of Lagos.
Themed “Building dApps on FVM”, the 3-hour session of innovation and creativity gathered developers, coders, entrepreneurs, blockchain enthusiasts and tech innovators to explore opportunities in decentralized data storage and make an impact in the Filecoin ecosystem.

According to Filecoin Orbit, the hackathon session is an opportunity for builders to unleash their coding skills and imagination as they build groundbreaking applications and projects on the Filecoin Virtual Machine (FVM).
Molly Mackinlay, Engineering & Research Lead at Protocol Labs, opened the session with “Introduction to Filecoin”.
She introduced the problem with centralized Storage, discussing the limitations of traditional cloud storage, while also laying the foundation of decentralized storage networks and their advantages.
Molly further discussed how Filecoin leverages the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS) for data addressing while introducing the role of storage providers and their economic incentives through the FIL token.
Faith M. Roberts, a Web3 enthusiast, took charge of the Hands-on experience session as she explored the FVM Ecosystem for Technical Enthusiasts.

In her introduction, she took a deep dive into what the Filecoin Virtual Machine (FVM) is, its capabilities, and how it fits into the Filecoin ecosystem.
She also discussed the intersection of smart contracts with dApps. While smart contracts are self-executing agreements residing on a blockchain, dApps are applications that leverage blockchain technology for decentralized operations.
Summarily, smart contracts are the power source that makes dApps function, and dApps are the user-friendly interfaces that allow interaction with the power of smart contracts.

Facilitated by Faith, the participants had a hands-on session on “Building DApps on FVM” to enhance their technical skills.
The practical session exposed the participants to building innovative dApps that leverage the power of FVM and decentralized storage.
In addition, they learnt how to create smart contracts that enhance the capabilities of Filecoin and the broader blockchain ecosystem.
Other highlights of the workshop saw the participants receive guidance and mentorship from experienced blockchain professionals and connections with like-minded hackers.
