Filecoin Orbit Community hosted its first Meetup in Kaduna (FIL Kaduna) on Saturday, September 24, 2022, at Colab Innovation Campus in Kaduna.

This meetup came from the backdrop of the Filecoin Orbit Community’s collaboration with BlockHeader Web3’s  3-day workshop and hackathon in July at the same venue.

The FIL Kaduna meetup saw a convergence of blockchain experts and enthusiasts gathered to discuss and learn about various subjects in the blockchain ecosystem which includes Introduction to IPFS/Filecoin, Consensus Algorithm, Becoming a FIL Storage Provider and Opportunities in the Filecoin network.

Opening the Beyond Ethereum Merge session, Faith Roberts, Community Manager of Fil Kaduna introduced Filecoin to the early awaiting audience at the event, discussing why it was created, the technology that powers it (IPFS) and how it works.

She went ahead to explain the importance of decentralized storage and the benefits that comes with it.

“The Filecoin network can be seen as an alternative to Dropbox or any other cloud storage service provider where people subscribe to have their data saved”.

According to Faith, decentralized storage affords users to bargain for storage fees, rather than a fixed amount.

Going further in her words, hirers (users who need storage space) rent memory space from verified miners (storage providers).

“There are no fixed prices on decentralized storage as it is highly competitive and business-friendly”, Faith added.

Speaking next on “Consensus Algorithm”, Ibrahim Suleiman, commenced with a basic illustration of how the blockchain network works with the meaning of the Merge and its potential.

The merge will reduce power consumption, however, he noted that it will not reduce gas fees and increase the value of the Ethereum network.

Held a technical session, where he discussed “How to implement IPFS”. IPFS stands for Interplanetary File Storage and the session was very promising to the audience, especially developers.

Chukwuemeka Enoch Mbaebie, Convener of Filecoin and Ethereum Nigeria wasn’t left out of the presentation as he discussed “Introduction to IPFS and Filecoin”.

Enoch spoke about how Protocol Labs is changing the storage narrative through Filecoin while leveraging IPFS to implement decentralization.

According to him, the implementation of IPFS will help to redistribute the global wealth in cloud storage. He, therefore, encouraged participants to build solutions on IPFS.

The Filecoin Orbit Community has hosted events in Lagos, Abuja and Akwa-Ibom.
