The minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, has revealed that Internet of Things (IoT) centres will be established in six federal secondary schools in the federation in a drive to promote involvement of students in ICT.
Adamu who was speaking during the commissioning of the centre at the Federal Government Girls College (FGGC) Bwari, stated that already, one center has been established in Fed Science Technical College (FSTC) Yaba, Lagos.
Apart from the one established in FGGC, Bwari, he added that the centers will also be established in Queens College, Lagos, Federal Government College (FGC) Enugu, FGC Bauchi, FGC Benin and FGC Kano.
Adamu who was represented by the permanent secretary of the ministry, Sonny Echono, stated that the creation of the centers was aimed at turning the schools into smart schools for teaching and learning adding that it will also help raise new generation of technology creators who will become global problem solvers and job creators.
He urged the students not to waste the opportunity offered to them but to think of a productive things to do with what they have learnt.
In her welcome address, the principal of the School, Mrs Stella Omu, expressed delight over the center adding that it will help a great deal to make her student professionals even outside their future field.
She commended the ministry and Cisco and pledged to continue support them in their bid to bring about students who will be confident creators of new technologies.
Also speaking, a representative from Cisco, Mr Tonyi Olatayo revealed that apart from secondary schools, it has concluded arrangement to establish a network of IoT centers in universities and call for interested partners and companies to come on board and aid in enhancing innovative solutions in the country.
