Learning capabilities from student to student differ; same goes for their ability to adapt to situations especially with the advent of e-learning.
Contrary to popular opinion that learning online would be much easier than the traditional face-to-face way of learning, students are finding it difficult to transition. This has led to disinterest in the e-learning process.
There are a number of factors that contribute to the difficulty in learning online for students. Some of the factors include:
Poor time management
Most students would attest to the fact that keeping track of time is an issue. Online courses require time and effort. Daily commitments encroach on the time for learning and students find it hard keeping up. This can lead to poor performance because the student will not have the time to properly digest the courses and as such, rush through the learning process.
It takes a lot of discipline to stick to the scheduled time for learning especially when no one is physically present to monitor them.
To help students manage their time effectively, a planner is highly recommended to remind them of tasks and courses.
Poor network and non-access to devices
As a Nigerian, the odds are already against you when it comes to good network. To add to that, not every student can afford a PC or a smartphone.
This has deprived students the opportunity to access online courses and has also caused them to miss virtual classes. To add to that, some of their devices are weak and as such, are not compatible with most LMSs.
As a teacher, knowing what technical challenges your students face and how to help them through it is key.
Computer illiteracy
Not all students are tech savvy. This poses a great challenge to adaptation.
Many students cannot operate basic programs neither can they troubleshoot when there is a problem due to their poor knowledge in that area.
Teachers are encouraged to introduce basic computer trainings to build their technological proficiency. This will enable them take part in online classes seamlessly.
Low motivation
It can be overwhelming switching from one mode of learning to another in a short period of time. Many students register for online courses and either fail to follow up or drop off along the way. The aforementioned challenges can be contributing factors to low motivation.
A positive attitude and mindset is needed to help them get through this. Teachers can spice up their courses by introducing engaging exercises mid-course and devising means for students to collaborate and ask questions.
E-learning is the new normal and students have no choice but to adapt. We have made recommendations and we hope they help in making the learning process for them easier. We also recommend communicating challenges with teachers at all times.
