Looking at the situation a few years back, we all can remember that letters sent through the ubiquitous post offices around the country took several weeks to get delivered.

Putting a call through to a family, friend or business associate abroad was a very costly move. Reconnecting with old forgotten childhood friends, colleagues or relatives was a struggle.

Then came the Internet, one of the most wonderful inventions of mankind. Even though some have argued that it is a tool by certain governments to control the world, the reality is that it has come to make things easier in this regard.

Impact of Internet

The rise of the Internet and the advancement of social media have completely transformed the way we communicate, the way we live, and the way we make and maintain relationships. We no longer need frequent visits to houses, cafes, offices or bars to keep in touch with our folks. Wikipedia are information websites where the content is submitted and updated by the users. Video sharing websites like YouTube are also very popular; everyone can post videos on almost any topic they choose which can be shared with any person in the world.

Finally, social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Pinterest, etc, have offered completely new options for individuals to be socially connected, by creating personal profiles which can be used as a digital scrapbook, photo album, communications portal and journal. People can deliver to each other public, private or instant messages and can also group their friends into different categories based on the amount of information they want to share with them.

Companies, colleges, charities, and other organisations have also joined by signing up to these social media platforms and creating pages that people can follow or recommend.

Distractions caused by the Internet

Unfortunately, however, the blessing of real time connections provided by the Internet has created another problem that the world can do without. This is made manifest by the plethora of distractions caused by being connected.

A recent research, for instance, has shown that 76 per cent of students are being distracted from their studies by the Internet. — Finish Reading on the Punch Website
