Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, the Executive Vice Chairman/ CEO of NCC, has reassured consumers in the telecom sector of protection, in the usage of telecom devices and services, through thorough regulation
Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta stated this, at the conference of the 1st virtual World Consumer Rights Day, (VWCRD), held today, Monday, March 15. 2021.
The theme of this year’s event is ‘Tackling Plastic Pollution’. “The theme for Consumer Rights Day for 2021, is tackling plastic pollution. We know plastic and we know pollution. Companies generate all kinds of pollution. Some are not even seen”, stressed Danbatta.
Danbatta stated tha,t the conference is conceived to highlight NCC’s commitment to protecting the telecom consumers and to highlight the regulatory roles of NCC, with respect to protecting the rights of telecom consumers and to connect with the global significance of today’s celebrations.
“Remember, there was a time I stood here and lectured on those kinds of pollutions that are esoteric, but equally dangerous as water pollution and air pollution.
The theme of this year’s Consumer Rights Day revolves around Plastic Pollution. The reason for this, is not far fetched. The handsets are made of plastics. The cases we use, in order to secure our handsets, are mostly made of plastic”, explained Danbatta.
Danbatta explained that, plastic materials, take over 50 years to degrade biologically, even, if buried inside the soil, hence, they need to be properly disposed off to avoid pollution.
“As we digitally transform, by leveraging the power of the Information and communication Network, we’ve got to put this network in a way and manner, that will inspire the confidence of the consumers, to patronize services that are hosted on the networks”, Danbatta reiterated.
In further explaining why bringing the issue of tackling plastic pollution at this time is apt, is because of the quantity of plastic waste being generated telecom devices.
“So, we find a large quantity of plastic, constituting the telephone devices, the hand held devices that we use. It is important to devote time, in order to talk about what we do, to contain the pollution that is associated with these plastics”, Danbatta stressed.
Stressing the Commission’s efforts at protecting telecom consumers, Danbatta reiterated the creation of the 112 Emergency code and 2442 Do-Not-Disturb codes, which many telecom consumers are taking advantage of.
The event was attended, both physically at the NCC Headquarters in Abuja and virtually, by NCC Management and staff, stakeholders in the telecom industry and members of the Media.
