The results of the Q2 2022 survey on three measures, conducted by the Bitcoin Mining Council (BMC), a voluntary global forum of bitcoin mining businesses and others in the sector, have been released.

  • Electricity use
  • Technology effectiveness
  • Combination of green power

The survey’s findings indicate that:

Presently, 66.8% of the electricity used by BMC members and survey respondents comes from sustainable sources.

According to this information, it is anticipated that the global bitcoin mining industry presently uses 59.5 percent or had a growth of about 6 percent year over year between Q2 2021 and Q2 2022, making it one of the most environmentally friendly sectors worldwide.

In its most recent voluntary sector survey, the BMC has already gathered information from more than half of the worldwide bitcoin network, or 107.7 exahashes (EH), as of June 30, 2022.

Furthermore, it is anticipated that the technological efficiency of the worldwide bitcoin network increased year over year by 46%, rising from 14.4 EH per gigawatt (GW) in Q2 2021 to 21.1 EH per GW in Q2 2022.
This increase in effectiveness confirms that as the Bitcoin Network expands, it will eventually become even more effective.

The BMC, which was established in May 2021 with assistance from some of the biggest bitcoin mining businesses in the market, is releasing this data as its fifth quarterly release.

The bitcoin network’s hash rate and associated security surged by 137 percent year over year in the second quarter of 2022, although energy consumption only rose by 63 percent.

Additionally, the BMC noticed an improvement in the efficiency of 46% year over year as a result of:

  • Technological advancements in semiconductors
  • The quickening growth of mining in North America
  • The exodus from China
  • The widespread use of renewable energy sources and cutting-edge bitcoin mining methods

Darin Feinstein, the co-founder of Core Scientific and the BMC, said that the hash rate of the BMC membership rose from 37 EH at the time of its founding to 108 EH in Q2 2022.

With members distributed across 5 continents, the BMC now accounts for 50.5 percent of the whole Bitcoin mining network in just one year.

Since sunlight is the best disinfectant, according to the founder of the Bitcoin Mining Council (BMC), it is critical that people throughout the world are informed about how much energy is consumed and carbon dioxide is emitted by the Bitcoin Network.
