It is never easy to excel as a subsidiary brand. The new Honor brand of the Chinese company, Huawei, however, introduced a new smartphone in its stable – Honor 3C smartphone, which received a honor for a great price-to-performance ratio.
Design
This phones boasts of a glossy surface and the casing is made of synthetic material which is a magnet for dust and prints; and for a brilliant workmanship. The sturdy case is available in either white, black or grey; with rounded edges and corners making it easy to hold in your hands.
The dimension of 139.5 x 71.4 x 9.2mm and 140g weight ranks it as one of the friendlier and comfortable devices to use, when compared to Acer Liquid Z5 and Microsoft Lumia 535 that are a bit slimmer.
Display
The Honor 3C smartphone is equipped with a 5-inch LCD IPS display that has a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. It has a good contrast ratio of 677 : 1 that is on par with other devices, and a maximum brightness of 479 cd/m2 with an impressive well balanced illumination of 90% giving it a standard color spectrum.
Despite having a black value of 0.7 cd/m2 that is considered to be good compared to other devices in its league, pictures on its display appears plastic and the black color is reasonably dark. Another disappointment, is that the grey colors tend to give a reduced blue tinge at maximum brightness.
Still, the Honor 3C has proven to be good for outdoor usage due to its sufficient brightness and glossy screen. Besides, the IPS technology gives the display a great viewing angle stability. Regardless of the content getting dark at high angles the colors remain stable.
Telephone and Speech Quality
Honor 3C has a decent speech quality with a telephone app that is similar to a modernized version the standard Google app. The telephone app features improved graphics with fundamental functions such as the groups, caller and favorite lists.
The speech quality, however, has traces of background noises, particularly at higher volumes.
Sound
A disappointment is the speaker with low sound which has distorted highs and the low notes are inaudible. Therefore, the 3.5 mm audio jack is helpful as it allows the user to plug in speakers or headphones which will produce good sound.
The speakers are placed on the back; and if you take the back off, you see the removable battery.
Camera
The front camera gives a high resolution of 5 MP for group pictures and selfies, while the main camera offers 8 MP. Even though the caption is bad in bad lighting with the strong blurring, the cameras still produce pictures of good quality compared with the cameras of devices in i.ts league.
Processor
This smartphone has a great hardware that supports a wide range of applications, thanks to the MediaTek MT6582 quad-core SoC that operates the at 1.3 GHz, as well as the 2 GB RAM alongside the Mali-400 MP2 graphics chip.
Software
For most smartphone lovers this phone may appear a bit disappointing, because it uses the somewhat out-of-date Android 4.2 Jelly bean OS.
Battery and Power Consumption
The Honor 3C smartphone requires up to 6.8 watts, and 0.6 to 1.9 watts when idle. It has a good battery runtime which lasts for 3.25 hours at full load.
Verdict
As a young brand of Huawei, the Honor brand is indeed doing a great job. Compared to its price range Honor 3C has a great price-to-performance ratio making it an investment worthy of pursuing.
