As the federal government steps up the crusade for the digitisation of government processes while doing everything to bring graft and corrupt practices in the government circle to the barest minimum, the Code of Conduct Bureau and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), organised a National seminar on Anti-Corruption tagged: “Code of Conduct Bureau: Fighting Corruption for Socio-Economic Development in Nigeria”.
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami, represented by the Director-General of National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), while speaking at the seminar, called for the digitisation of government processes to control the graft and wanton corruption experienced in the country.
He said, “When you Digitise government processes, no one will have a monopoly of power to compromise, processes will also not be tweaked to suit personal prejudices because the very moment the process is automated, there is no need to meet physically to get services, governance and processes will be more opened and transparent.
This digitisation will also democratise government service delivery thereby ensuring accountability, simply because records will be better kept and can be accessed any time they are needed”.
The Minister made it known at the event that his Ministry a lot to curb sharp practices militating against national development. “There is a need to put down strategies and policies that will mitigate such acts.
This will pave ways for speedy development of the country, he remarked.
He gave the assurance that the Ministry is throwing its full weight behind the activities of the Code of Conduct Bureau aimed at eliminating corrupt practices across the country while providing for transparent governance.
The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Barrister Abubakar Malami (SAN) in his address applauded the organisers for putting up the event at a critical time like this when the government is deepening the anti-graft war.
He noted that there is an urgent need to make government operations and processes transparent as obtained in other climes where accountability and transparency are given utmost priority.
The Chairman, Code of Conduct Bureau, Prof. Isah Mohammed stated that the seminar was the first of its kind in the history of the nation while commending the efforts of the organisers.
His words: “This Bureau was established in response to the allegations of corruption against government operations in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s which led to coup and counter-coups with trillions from the national treasure carted from both domestic and foreign bodies as a result of corrupt practices by public officeholders. This is a scourge we are still striving to eliminate.
