The name ‘family business’, already connotes challenges, however, regardless of this fact, billions of family businesses survive, all over the world, presently.

How does one draw the line, between business and family, when dealing with close friends and family?

How does one settle family issues, without interference, in the business of the family?

One way to avoid unnecessary rifts is, in balancing work life and social life.

When specific roles, are designated to the workforce, including the family members that work for the family business, it will be easier to track progress and monitor responsibilities.

Map out an organizational structure that will show, how the business will be run, on shared responsibilities.

Everyone working for the family business should have a certain role in the business and roles should be based on merit and not based on favoritism.

The right people, with the required skills, should occupy the positions available.

There should be an organizational chart, listing everyone’s specific roles.

After laying a good foundation, to establish a business, there should be a legally backed, succession plan.

If this plan is not specifically spelt out, everyone will want to take over the business, at some point and this may result in chaos and eventual death, of that business.

Succession should not also be on the basis of favoritism and personal issues. What is the aim of the business?

Who is the best person that can handle the business, appropriately?

The vision of the business and the capabilities of each member will determine the succession to the head of the business and eventual success of the business.

While seeing to the affairs of the success of a business, never neglect the place for family time.

Work can get strenuous and tiring. It is advisable, to, regularly, set out a separate time, for your family.

This family time, should not involve any work-related issues.

Go for dinners. See movies together and encourage unity among the family members.

Let everyone know that, they are all on the same page and the team is in one mind.

Family issues are normal. It is what makes them families but never involves family issues, in the workplace.

Just because, you and your son had a heated argument at home the previous day, does not mean that you should use the same anger, to relate with him, or, any other worker, at work.

When a task is to be done, be professional enough, to allow such issues, to fade away and face the current task at hand, in a professional manner.

When you get home, you can deal with the issues you have with your family members and not at the workplace.

In all, there should be a steady workflow, irrespective of the relationship you have with your co-workers, at work.

Encourage members of the team to be in and work in one mind with one another.
