Speed reading? Now, imagine trying to read an application letter but because of its tiny words and lengthy pages, you skip to the end, where the bold words that summarize or tell the most important information the letter is detailed about.

Don’t fret majority do it, but after confirming the big news, how many go back to peruse through the letter.

Only a few do, while others don’t, majorly because they have gotten the necessary info or because is strenuous to read through it.

Most times is because of fear of reading a lengthy letter, and this can make one miss some essential details still in the body of that letter.

When it comes to reading, people tend to get lazy because of the so much time spent to grab and assimilate words.

Imagine how much reading could be accomplished if one can complete all the reading required one-third of the time? Or even in half the time.

Avoidance of this impassive attitude is necessary for the children’s learning. With an introduction and also placing value on “speed reading”.

Children will develop a high interest in reading and eradicate laziness when the reading task is brought up.

What is Speed Reading?

Speed reading is basically about learning and understanding the foundational principles regarding the human visual system, allowing you to eradicate inefficiencies in your reading and increase the speed at which you read while also improving your remembrance.

Any slight progress in reading can save much time in the long term. Many people report massive gains in reading after a build-up of speed reading skills.

One can relate to this skill as a superpower because it involves a lot of natural vision and concentration, involving high mental use.

Even Bill Gate and Warren Buffet wishes this was a superpower they would like to have. When a student at Nebraska State asked Bill Gates and Warren Buffet the superpower question, Gates answered:

“Being able to read super fast.” And Buffett echoed him, adding, “I’ve probably wasted ten years reading slowly.”

Today adults are currently seeking ways to learn speed reading and some parents have also harnessed this skill in teaching their children this long-term profit.

A little math equation

An average rate reader could read at approximately 250 words per minute with a non-technical material and have a casual comprehension of 60%. High readers could reach more than 1,000 wpm with a near 85% comprehension of the material.

A 200-page book usually approximates 50,000 words.

If one reads at the rate of 200 wpm (words per minute), it will take 50,000 / 200 / 60 = 4.17 hours to read it.

If one can read at the rate of 500 wpm, it will take approximately 1.67 hours to read.

If a child can read at the rate of 800 wpm, it will take approximately 1.00 hours to read just a book. This is why some of the kids can read two-three books in a day.

And all that with the same or even outstanding comprehension. Impressive.

Tools Teaching Speed Reading to Kids

It is easier to teach speed reading to children than adults, just like it is easier for a child to learn a new language than adults.

That’s why regard to this skill is important in children at an early age. Adequate tools like PowerPoint and PDF generators aid the use of this skill.

PowerPoint

A teacher or parent can create PowerPoint slides with a word on each slide and a quick change to the slides, to aid speed reading.

PDF Generator

A book could be generated into a PDF file with each word individually on a page. The PDF file is then opened in a full-screen mode and quickly it changes from one page (word) to another.

Four Essentials in Speed-Reading

Four primary essentials to learning and keeping retention of speed-reading are:

Natural vision — begin to recognize more than one word immediately

Visualization — picture the story you are reading in your mind so well it feels like watching a movie.

Relax — don’t act hasty, relax while concentrating and visualizing to get maximum comprehension.

Daily practice — the importance of self-discipline is important in every field and so as this.
