For those who say that it is over for Microsoft in the mobile world, then, I think you should think again. In as much as I can do without selected Google services, I think the world is not better off with only one mobile OS which is why I sincerely hope that the likes of iOS, Tizen, Saltfish*** and Windows survive the android onslaught.
In my opinion, I think Windows 10 mobile actually does give Microsoft a boost and a chance to stage a massive comeback. I say this because I have been using Lumia 950 XL in the last couple of weeks and its been an amazing experience so far. At some point, I had to remind myself that this isn’t an android phone because I am so in love with the device.
Some of the amazing experiences the phone has given me so far includes the fact that it is now serving as our 3rd video camera for Tech Trends production simply because this amazing piece of device shoots 4K video which is currently world standard for videographers. I believe tech trends is one of the few, if not the only TV show (not movie) in Nigeria that will be shot with 3 cameras – all thanks to Lumia 950XL.
Let me move on to another feature that I love about the phone; the improved and far fluid UI (user interface). I honestly give the Windows 10 mobile UI a pass mark because of how welcoming I find it. It makes it so easy for me to move across apps and other features seamlessly. Put succinctly, I just love the way it responds.
Finally for this post, I think the Windows App store needs a lot of improvement because it is certainly lagging behind, but I think the app thing is overrated. So far, I have not really missed some of the most important apps that I use daily such as;
- All the Microsoft One services (drive, note, word etc.)
- Evernote
- Social media (LinkedIn Facebook, Instagram, Twitter)
- Lastpass
- Whatsapp and Wechat
- Share.it
- YouTube
- Plus tons of other useful apps and games
Sadly, here aresome important apps that I miss on Lumia 950XL;
- Asana
- Any.do
- Gmail
- Hootsuite
Some of the failures of the Lumia 950XL include plastic look and feel, which isn’t no where near premium and an unimpressive battery life. Yes, it charges quickly, but I am not impressed with it overall.
Be that as it may, I think Microsoft needs to get back to the drawing board and churn out a couple of mid-range and low budget windows 10 phones that will compete in the market because windows 10 mobile is it for Microsoft!
