Hardly does a day pass by in Nigeria without a number of articles on social media. It does not stop there. Outside the shores of the country, hardly a week or month go by without a huge event going on around social media. Of course, we are catching up based on the Eventbrite Lagos/Nigeria feeds report I receive daily. This is a welcome development indeed!

A few weeks ago, Lagos played host to what was unarguably the largest social media event in Nigeria and across sub-Saharan Africa. This year’s edition witnessed an increased number of participants.

Social Media Week is a worldwide week-long conference that aims at exploring social, cultural and economic effects of social media. The main mission of the conference is to share ideas, trends, experiences and inspiration to help people and organisations realise how to attain more in a hyper-connected world.

This year’s theme centred on “Upwardly Mobile: The Rise of a Connected Africa.” What excited me the most was not all the razzmatazz that went with it, but the fact that Nigeria is rising up on the map of ardent Internet users, which for me is a good step forward.

However, the relevant question is: what quantum of local content are we contributing to the world of social media? Sadly, at the moment, next to nothing and this is why we must go beyond that noise to create substance so that we can earn start foreign exchange from this trend. — Continue Reading
