Filecoin Orbit Community recently hosted its first meetup outside Nigeria in Accra, Ghana tagged, “FIL ACCRA”.
The meetup took place at Ghana Innovation Hub, Accra with a gathering of Orbit Ambassadors, devs, operators, data storage providers, implementers, researchers, and enthusiasts.
Speaking at the opening of the event, Enoch Mbaebie, Orbit Nigeria Lead welcomed all participants while commending the Orbit Leads for Uganda and Tanzania for their role in driving the Pan-African agenda for creating awareness on Filecoin, IPFS, and Web3 opportunities.
“So one of our goals is to see how we could set up these projects here in Ghana where we take the message of decentralized storage around each community within each location”, Enoch commented
Enoch also acknowledged the role of Protocol Labs in projecting this awareness on the African continent while stating how the company is an open-source research and development Laboratory with a focus on building protocols and services for the new internet.
While explaining what the “new internet” means, Enoch mentioned that the concept is related to Web3.
According to the Orbit Nigeria Lead, the new internet is upgradeable, immutable, resilient, and decentralized. This concept is what Protocol Labs is promoting and one of the tools to achieve it is the IPFS (Interplanetary File System).
“Filecoin is a decentralized storage network, preserving man’s most important information and Filecoin Foundation is the steward of the Filecoin community, aspiring to put the power of humanity’s most important information back into the hands of everyone.”, Enoch explained
Stating further, Enoch once again acknowledged the drive from Ugandan and Kenyan Orbit Community and reiterated the Orbit Community’s effort to drive the campaign in Ghana.
Web3 is all about decentralization, and one of the tools that will aid it is IPFS. IPFS wants to see that your information is preserved and assessed as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Brian Ahimbisibwe, Orbit Uganda Lead, discussed, “Reinventing Storage”. According to Brian, Filecoin and IPFS will drive decentralization as the current mode of cloud storage is location-based and they are prone to data breaches and hacks.
This infers that centralized storage isn’t safe and there is the issue of centralized storage providers selling users’ information to third-party providers.
Further explaining, Brain said that data on centralized storage is being censored and monitored as well as having the authority to share this information.
The location-centric approach of centralized storage is prone to many challenges, which is why decentralized storage is promoting a content-centric approach.
This is where IPFS/Filecoin comes in as the IPFS helps in a peer-to-peer way, then filecoin is providing a decentralized storage cloud for this information.
IPFS is going to help us with how to share this information and data across different users, thus filecoin is a blockchain network for decentralized Cloud Storage.
Allan Mang’eni, Orbit Kenya Lead spoke on “Building Your First DApps With IPFS”. Allan looked at why DApps should be built on IPFS and the tools to deploy. According to Allan, DApps stands for decentralized applications running on a peer-to-peer network.
Allan further explained how the decentralization concept will thrive on DApps since it is not dependent on any central platform to work.
Martin Sylvester, Orbit Tanzania Lead, spoke on “Business Opportunities In The Ecosystem”, emphasizing Data Storage Providers as they earn on filecoin when they provide storage space. The more storage you have, the higher the chance of making money. He also discussed the system requirements, new innovations in data mining,
Secondly, he mentioned filecoin staking but warned attendees to be aware of scammers. Other opportunities discussed included, Grants and Accelerators, Filecoin Orbit Community Program.
Finally, Likem Dzokot a Ghanaian Blockchain Developer spoke on “Building And Deploying An NFT Collection On IPFS”. During his discussion, he demonstrated how NFTs can be created.
During the course of the meetup, Filecoin Orbit Community formally launched @FIL AFRICA to continue the Pan-African amplification of IPFS and Filecoin.
