The emerging reality called the internet of things (IoT) is a catch-all term for the growing number of electronics that are not traditional computer devices but are connected to the internet to send data, receive instructions or both.
With IoT, we are increasingly getting used to connecting everyday devices in our home to the internet and to each other to make the places we live and work more comfortable, economical, and safe.
In my recent chat with Caesar Keluro, Founder Nanocentric Technologies on Tech Trends show, he discusses how economies can benefit from IoT.
CFA: Caesar, glad to have you on Tech Trends today.
Caesar: Nice meeting you, CFA.
CFA: Tell us, what is IoT?
Caesar: IoT is a sensor network of smart devices that enables people, applications, and systems to collect and share data. It’s one of the amazing technologies of this time that enables us to capture data and deploy that data to improve business outcomes.
It’s something inspiring having given us the privilege to access out-of-reach places, to enable us to gather sensitive data and deploy it for business process automation, driving profitable outcomes for businesses.
It’s an amazing time to explore this technology having realized that we are privileged to be deploying sensitive applications enabling us to drive conversations on how to improve in those processes, transform our pain-points into data forms that improve collective business decision-making.
CFA: You’ve said a lot of things. Let’s look at some of the use cases of IoT. How can IoT be beneficial?
Caesar: In one of the experiences we’ve had in our conversation with our partner, we realized that the Dangote refinery- the Greenfield project- should utilize digitalization. When I say digitalization, it’s easy for us to build or integrate IoT into a refinery of that sort.
So you can begin to build from the ground, as you’re building the whole physical infrastructure, you can create a digital twin enabling you to collect what is called predictive insights on how to improve maintenance either periodically or at certain times in other to capture the whole processes of the refinery itself.
