The security industry is constantly changing as the current technological revolution is completely transforming the industry for the better. The effect of this technological shift has been nothing but positive.

From law enforcement agencies, smartphone use to recruitment processes, the union of technology and security system has greatly transformed home and business security.

While it’s impossible for security professionals to monitor all parts of an area at all times, having a unified system that includes cameras alarm detectors and analytic tools can give them immediate information if an accident occurs or if a situation requires urgent attention.

Security organizations may be late adopters of technology to manage their workforces but once implemented the early benefits of technological solutions become quite apparent.

I had a chat with Olawale Atekoja, CEO of Seclot on the Tech Trends show where he shared insights on how we can adopt state-of-the-art security in Nigeria.

CFA: Olawale, glad to have you on Tech Trends.

Olawale: Thank you for having me on the show.

CFA: What’s your take on the security situation in the country today?

Olawale: Considering the state of the nation, with issues of kidnapping, killings in the north, and banditry, I would say it is really depressing and alarming.

We didn’t expect this as that the time we voted but right now it seems we have no solution to these challenges. What I would say is that we need to look inward and see how best we can solve it.

CFA: For those of us in the technology space, the question on our collective minds is what role can technology play in all of this? What’s your take?

Olawale: When you look at the strength of technology there are quite a lot of roles it can play. For example, in the case of kidnapping, we heard about the U.S. guy that was kidnapped and how he was rescued overnight.

Although we don’t have the details on how that was done, I’m sure it was through technology.  We could use the tracking systems in drones to check on those guys.  I know there’s quite a lot of things that could be put in place.

I don’t know what’s happening at the helm of affairs that is not allowing us to address insecurity when we have surveillance systems that can curb this issue. That’s just what I’ll say for now.

CFA: It’s important that viewers know what they can do to protect themselves. What are some of the equipment out there, devices that people can use to protect themselves because it’s getting quite worrisome in the country?

Olawale: Some have talked about licensing of guns which is not legal as of today in Nigeria. When we talk about protecting ourselves as individuals, there are basic things we have to start with including prevention.
