The Nigerian government has intensified plans to provide frameworks, guidelines, standards that will enable the adoption of blockchain technologies in the country.

Dr. Isa Pantami, The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy made this known at a panel while speaking on the benefits of blockchain technology tagged “Blockchain – The end of unearned education” at the ongoing Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (GITEX 2020) in Dubai.

The leader of the Nigerian delegation to GITEX 2020, while giving his address highlighted that relevant agencies have called on the public service and banks to put consumers in mind while working on the regulatory policies.

According to Dr. Isa Pantami, feedbacks from private businesses and professional institutions are pointers to the fact that the technology has come to stay in Nigeria and the global space.

Undoubtedly this technological advancement has brought about improvements among Nigerian startups in terms of business procedures especially in the new ecosystem and value chain occasioned by this novel technology.

Speaking further, the Minister mentioned education and financial institutions as sectors in dire need of the technology. He advised them to follow the example of the Nigerian Customs Service blockchain technology adoption.

“Government’s role in Blockchain technology adoption is strategic. It requires that governments in different regions should come up with policies to support Blockchain deployment. In Nigeria, we are already doing that.

“As a country, Nigeria is working towards becoming the leading nation in the Digital Economy. The Federal Government of Nigeria has developed a Digital Economy Policy that has eight pillars that crave for investments and Pillar seven which speaks about ‘Digital Society and Emerging Technologies’ and addresses issues around Blockchain Technology”, The Minister said.

The Minister, however, opined that more orientation on the blockchain will enable the citizens and institutions to understand why such technology should be deployed, especially in the educational sector where certificates must not be compromised.
