Nigeria’s Innovation Flywheel: Turning Early AI Uptake into Economic Acceleration

By Seyi Oke, Lead Consultant, Duo-Phoenix Limited

In the fast-paced world of business, success is often determined by the ability to adapt, innovate, and execute strategies that drive growth. Duo-Phoenix, a dynamic consulting firm based in Lagos, Nigeria, is at the forefront of this mission, dedicated to empowering businesses across Africa with tailored solutions that optimize operations, streamline processes, and implement innovative strategies.

A Vision Born from Experience and Passion

Duo-Phoenix’s story began in 2018, ignited by a spark during a seemingly routine moment in my life. As I prepared for NYSC registration, I encountered an unexpected challenge—there was no registration centre on the full campus.

This experience planted the seed for what would eventually become Duo-Phoenix. Although the initial business venture didn’t take off as expected, it fueled my passion for solving problems and understanding human behaviour.

With a deep love for psychology and a desire to make a difference, I embarked on a personal journey to study how our thoughts, influenced by what we see and hear, shape our decisions. This passion led me to pursue a Master’s in Marketing and Sales from Rome Business School, equipping me with the tools to launch Duo-Phoenix—a consulting firm that merges strategic thinking with creative execution to enhance business performance and
profitability.

Navigating Nigeria’s Unique Startup Ecosystem

Operating a startup in Nigeria presents its own set of challenges. The Nigerian business environment, while rich in opportunities, requires resilience and strategic thinking to navigate the economic and social hurdles. At Duo-Phoenix, we initially faced the challenge of proving our value without a robust portfolio of success stories. To overcome this, we began by offering pro bono consultancy, using these experiences to build a track record of success.

Over the past four years, our marketing and sales strategies have successfully guided businesses across the Western region of Africa, generating revenues exceeding $7 million.

One of our key strategies has been “Strategic Collaboration,” which has enabled us to expand our reach and operate at various levels. This approach has been instrumental in our growth and has set us apart in a competitive market.

To put it in Nigerian parlance, “Being someone’s boy is the best form of recommendation you can get.” This isn’t about godfatherism; rather, it’s about positioning your business to take advantage of crucial information. Imagine having privileged access to diverse levels of information—both locally and internationally—simply because you’ve built the right relationships.

The key is knowing how to leverage these strategic collaborations effectively. We’ve also realized that many sectors can borrow strategies from one another to achieve even greater results.

Leveraging Nigeria’s Strengths

Nigeria boasts a young, tech-savvy population and a strong sense of community—assets that Duo-Phoenix has leveraged to its advantage.

Being headquartered in Lagos, the commercial capital of Nigeria provides us with access to a vast market. We have utilized this advantage to help our clients secure a significant share of the addressable market.

Currently, we are working on an exciting project to introduce one of our clients, a financial institution in Lagos, to about 15,000 businesses by the end of 2024. Looking Ahead: Innovating for the Future As a service-oriented company, Duo-Phoenix is always looking for ways to innovate and provide even greater value to our clients. We are currently developing a Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) product that aims to solve a critical problem in the edu-tech sector.

This product, designed for the Nigerian and African markets, is set to launch in the first quarter of 2025. This new venture represents our commitment to staying ahead of the curve and continuously evolving to meet the needs of our clients.

Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs

The Nigerian startup scene is brimming with potential, but success requires more than just a great product. My advice to aspiring entrepreneurs in Nigeria is to focus as much on sales and marketing as on product development.

In fact, I believe that securing your market should come before your product hits the market. For example, before we began developing our upcoming product, we identified and engaged with at least a hundred potential users within our network. This approach ensures that when the product is ready, there’s already a market eager to use it.

In other words, dear aspiring entrepreneurs, secure your market share before your product enters the market.

Additionally, I advise entrepreneurs to prioritize success over popularity. Chasing popularity can be expensive, and it’s easy to waste funds that should be used for business growth.

I like to compare this to how a submarine operates. Many aspiring entrepreneurs spend more time discussing and sharing future plans with colleagues and friends than putting in the necessary work to achieve their goals.

Like a submarine, it’s important to stay focused and avoid the temptation of releasing dopamine (success hormones) prematurely by merely talking about your plans.

When you share ideas and insights, your mind can perceive the end goal as already achieved, leading to complacency. This is why, at the end of the year, you might find that you haven’t accomplished as much as you hoped.

Finally, I always advise our clients to attach a sense of fear or embarrassment to their targets. The best way to explain this is through the story of the rat.

Imagine placing a piece of cheese in front of a rat while tying the rat to a stand. Motivated by the desire to eat the cheese, the rat will exert some effort to reach it, but if the effort isn’t enough, it will eventually give up.

However, if you introduce a cat behind the rat, the motivation changes drastically, and the rat will summon much more strength to escape the stand it’s tied to.

In 2018, I asked myself a critical question: “If I had a terminal illness that required a significant amount of money for surgery, would I be left to die, relying on the mercy of others to fundraise, or would I know the right people who could help me raise the funds?” This fear drove me to build relationships with key individuals and learn how to do business on a larger scale. I latched onto the fear of dying or being at the mercy of community contributions to achieve what I now call success.

So, dear aspiring entrepreneurs, what are you “afraid or ashamed of” that will drive you to reach your goals?

Why Duo-Phoenix?

At Duo-Phoenix, we pride ourselves on delivering measurable value to our clients. Our expertise lies in optimizing business operations for efficiency, streamlining processes, and implementing innovative strategies that drive growth. In the past four years alone, our strategies have helped businesses across Western Africa generate revenues exceeding $7 million. We are eager to continue this journey of growth and success, and we invite you to be part of it.
