This model of inquiry allows students focus on questions instead of answers. That way, the focus is on the quality, refinement, and effect of the questions.
Two of the most common functions of a question are to induce thinking or evaluate knowledge.
These questions can be used as a powerful assessment strategy, and serve as a driving force behind inquiry.
Question-based learning entails the following steps:
Choose a topic
This is the first and most crucial aspect because all other steps are hinged on this.
You can suggest topics for students to choose from wit the aim of eliciting more questions from students.
The topic(s) should be relatable and something that students can contribute to.
After choosing a topic or skill, students can then focus on the purpose of the topic instead of seeing the process as something that was fixed as an afterthought into their activities at the time.
Teachers must bear in mind that question-based learning is a strategy for learning on the part of students and not a process meant to overshadow their ideas, thought processes, and inquiry.
Think up questions
This is where students brainstorm questions for a stipulated period of time, while they narrow down to the questions that stand out for them.
You can ask students to read their questions out loud and give your opinion on ways they can improve the guiding question or set of questions.
Students learn via varying processes and under different circumstances.
Students can be encouraged to learn from these questions in ways that are most suitable for them – ongoing research, watching a video, direct instruction, listening to a podcast, taking a course and pairing that follow-up reading, etc.
Students should take notes and document the ways the question(s) have changed as well as the causes of the changes.
