Techstars Startup Weekend was held in the city of Aba from the 28th – 30th of January, 2022.
The Techstars Startup Weekend is a global event where designers, developers, marketers, and startup enthusiasts come together to share ideas, form teams, and launch startups within 54-hours.
In a bid to build the entrepreneurship and innovation ecosystem in Abia state and South East Nigeria, in general, the lead organizer of this year’s event, Mrs Bestie Atti along with her team of startup and technology enthusiasts and volunteers successfully organized the 6th edition of the event, since 2015.
The event was facilitated by Mr Daniel Chinagozi, the CEO of Innovation Growth Hub (IGHub), a Techstars Global Facilitator with years of experience organizing and facilitating Techstars Startup Weekend events.
This year’s local lead sponsor was Innovation Growth Hub, a creative, business and technology incubation hub supporting startup, entrepreneurship and technology development, with offices in Aba, Onitsha and Asaba.
Other sponsors include: Connekt Broadband, Freshworks for Startups, Google for Startups, Miro, GoDaddy Registry.
The weekend had 125 active participants, who pitched 26 ideas, 8 pitches emerged when the ideas were voted and 8 teams were formed.
The top 8 teams include, TechyTeachers, Blaaq.io, FoodAssured, AfroSchool Labs, Advert Hub, Medivate Care, YC Homes and StemIT.
The teams were then assigned to mentors with expertise in product development, marketing, partnerships, communications, etc who guided each group in their startup-building process.
Gracing the occasion were sponsors, investors, and big shots in the Tech and startup ecosystem.
The likes of Ezinne Nwazulu, Managing Partner 234finance.com; Akintunde Mourinho, CEO of Utopia Media; Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata (CFA), Regional Director Founders Institute; Soumitra Deshpande from Freshworks; Ifeanyi Adirika, CEO of Connekt Broadband; Edward Esene, Co-Founder of Plus Innovation Hub; Igwe Uguru, Founder and CEO of Chooya an African search engine; Eze Jubilee, CEO and founder of Yangi media; Emmanuel Alozie, Abia Internal Revenue Service Head of ICT; Nnanna John, co-founder Rad5 Tech Hub; Theo Jethro, Netpreneur and Funnel Hacker, Mary Thomas, Business Consultant; and Kalu Jane Peter, CEO KJ’s Spot Digital Agency among others.
At the event, these budding startups got much-needed help from experts in the industry, some startups were adopted by investors for mentorship and support; and the top three startups from the final pitch battle each won an automatic entry into the IGHub BizBoost Incubation program which is set to begin in March 2022.
