The Nigerian Senate recently confirmed the nomination of Barr. Adeleke Adewolu as an Executive Commissioner.
This took place after careful consideration and adoption of the Senate Committee on Communication’s report headed by Senator Oluremi Tinubu.
This nomination nevertheless didn’t go down well with some Southeast Senators who pointed out a case of under-representation of the region on the board of NCC presently.
These senators objected to the nomination while citing Section 14(4) of the Nigerian Constitution.
Senator Francis Onyewuchi, representing Imo East, demanded a stall on the report by the Senate Committee on Communications, pending the time someone from the Southeast is placed in the coveted position.
Senators Uche Ekwunife and Rochas Okorocha from the South East also called the attention of the Senate to the absence of representatives from the region on the NCC Board.
Nevertheless, this didn’t stop the Senate President, Ahmad Lawan from confirming the nomination of Adeleke Adewolu.
He, however, gave directives to the Senate Committee on Communications to carry out investigations on the Southeast marginalization on the NCC board.
Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe from the Southeast who currently is the Minority Leader of the Senate confirmed that there was a vacancy reserved for the region, but unfortunately, it stands vacant.
Further elaborating his point, he explained that the erstwhile representative on the NCC board had relinquished his position on the grounds of contesting elections.
This according to Senator Enyinnaya was the reason no Southeast representative is presently on the governing board of the NCC.
Adeleke’s nomination still stands after it was subjected to a voice vote by the Senate President.
