As we celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child themed: Digital Generation, Our Generation, we do not only show support to the girl child, create awareness on the gender inequality in key sectors and seek greater opportunities for them.
We also acknowledge the role technology has played and continues to play in fueling their resilience despite the odds stacked against them.
As we all know, technology has played a major role in the improvement that many girls have experienced especially in Africa – from helping them reach their full potential through access to education and healthcare, to helping them amplify their voices against abuse and exploitation.
Before now, the underprivileged girl child had found it difficult to gain admission to private schools, coupled with their inability to afford the fees for coaching classes. Thanks to technology, with their phones and internet access, they can access learning centers online.
The online learning centers have ICT tools that help bring the classroom to these girls. This ensures that no matter where they live, they can have access to quality education.
Technology has also helped bring about change in communities, especially in the northern part of Nigeria, where fears and the stigma related to the education of the girl child still hinders them from realizing their true potential.
Currently, digital learning centers where girls can have access to sophisticated technology tools to aid learning. This has significantly reduced the knowledge gap on the digital realities of these girls.
The use and adoption of technology have empowered girls, enabled them to become aware of their rights, increased civic engagement, and helped them expand their sense of self in today’s world.
Thanks to technology, the girl child has been able to connect with and drawn inspiration from women who are doing tremendously well in their chosen careers and has given her, not just hope, but the tools to actualize her own dreams and aspirations as well.
Indeed, digitized girls can conquer the world. We just need to harness the full power technology wields to ensure this dominance. Here’s a toast to technology and the girl child.
