Rain in partnership with Huawei has recently launched the first commercial standalone 5G network on the African continent.
Based in South Africa, the data-only provider firm is set to enable a swift change in the country’s digital transformation.
Sometime in May, 2020, Vodacom launched 5G services in some of South Africa’s major cities including, CapeTown, Johannesburg, and Pretoria.
MTN South Africa also unveiled its commercial 5G service in July 2020 on the deployment of 100 sites with 5G capacity.
Liquid Telecom as well is set to launch 5G network in wholesale across major cities in South Africa.
Khaya Dlanga, Rain CMO commented, “Standalone 5G will demonstrate how 5G is powerful in realizing South Africa’s 4IR future.
Powered by Huawei’s global leading 5G solutions, our Standalone 5G will enable the industry’s digital transformation in the future, such as smart healthcare, smart ports, smart mining and smart manufacturing in South Africa.”
According to Khaya, the Standalone 5G coming from Rain will increase network reliability and lower latency rate.
Users of cloud gaming services and home broadband service subscribers would benefit immensely from the Standalone 5G.
Users also benefit unlimited data for 24hours daily with a free-to-use 5G router on the Rain’s 5G network.
Users have the leverage to pick from premium or standard options available as well as the speed of the network and streaming quality.
Capetown, Johannesburg and Tshwane already have the 5G network coverage. As part of its expansion plan, Rain has built another 5G site in Guateng.
In less than two years to come, Rain plans to deploy its 5G metro stations across South Africa.
Leveraging the functionalities of the mobile edge computing and advanced network-slicing, Rain plans to use this to explore personalized services with respect to increased capacity and low latency.
Huawei also commented that the 5G network will enable mobile operators to maximise their broadband service experience.
