Ask a newborn, and he’ll tell you that Education is the best legacy. Regards as the bedrock of success, parents have not stopped advising children to get educated so as to become rich.
Online learning has been around for quite some time and has become the new normal with the advent of the pandemic that struck the world in early 2020.
Learning is thus made flexible at all levels starting from basic education to tertiary education, but not without its challenges.
One would ask, what is basic education?
Basic education in simple terms is early childhood education; basically primary and junior secondary education, which is compulsory or should I say, a right of every child.
Technology heralds a new phase in the twenty-first century and without any doubt, is a veritable tool for learning.
Online class is making waves in higher education, thus the possibility of having the same impact on basic education has become a topic of discussion.
It is a fact that pupils are productive in a physical environment and learn fast with the presence of a guide or instructor, whom they can relate with.
Making basic pupils learn through the screen might not be very effective. Kids get bored easily!
They might just begin to liken learning to watch their favourite cartoon, which is just for the fun of it and will end up gaining nothing.
The presence of a parent might even help, but what happens when the parent is not available to monitor the process?
Thus, trading physical learning environments for the online platform is a challenge to basic education.
Access To Tech Devices
Quite a number of basic pupils do not have access to the right tech device for online learning, except maybe for a fortunate few, whose parents are enlightened and have the capability to acquire one.
There is a doubt on the success of effective online learning for basic education in the absence of necessary tech device.
Despite the clamour that it is a technology age, many pupils still do not have access to technological devices to aid e-learning and it is saddening.
How Tech Savvy are they?
When the use of a thing is not known, abuse is inevitable. A proper understanding of how to use the tech device avails one of its proper usage.
Despite having computer education as one of the subjects students learn in school, many of these pupils are still not computer literate.
Computer illiteracy poses a major challenge to online learning for basic education.
Cost of Data/Uninterrupted Internet Connection
Even when the technology device that gives access to e-learning class is available, how about a good and stable internet connection?
That’s not even enough! We buy data and yet we get no value for the cost of the data!
With virtually everyone on the internet, the cost and speed these days, are nothing to write home about.
Sometimes, one would even have to check and uncheck to be sure there are some megabytes left with an epileptic internet connection.
Hence, lack of stable internet connection and cost of data is a challenge, to online learning for basic education, and higher education, as well.
Oh! How difficult it is to get the attention of a kid in the physical classroom, how much more an online medium!
Yes, it’s a noisy world, but you see kids and distraction? Best of pals from ages past.
Distraction interferes with student’s learning process, hindering any productive outcome that may be achieved.
Besides, they are so used to being within the four walls of a classroom, so adjusting to learning remotely might just not be the best option for basic education pupils.
Measuring Productivity and Accountability
From the foregoing, we’re left with the question of productivity and accountability in online classes for basic education.
A child’s ability is easily measured in a physical classroom, but assessing productivity through an online platform may be cumbersome.
Are the lessons taken well received, retained and digested? There is also no means of measurement and accountability on time usage, in online learning for basic education.
Considering the aforesaid points, it is no gainsaying that, online learning and basic education are eroded with challenges that are ever willing to choke the process without any remedy, in order to render it ineffective.
