The Senate in plenary session today, has ordered for a probe of the 5G Communication network in Nigeria, with a view to assuring Nigerians of their safety before the deployment of the 5G network in Nigeria. The motion to carry out the probe was moved by Senator Uche Ekwunife.
In this regard, the Senate has requested the Federal Government to put on hold, the execution of the 5G network in Nigeria, mandating the Senate Committee on Communication, Public Health, Science and Technology, to carry out the investigation and report back to the Senate, within 4 weeks.
It will be recalled that, shortly after the outbreak of the virus in Nigeria, a global outcry that the coronavirus was caused by the radiations emitted from the deployment of the 5G network in some countries of the world. There has been a long debate on this, with many people for and against the notion.
Meanwhile, the NCC, through its Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, had allayed the fears of Nigerians, through a televised interview on Channels Television that, the radiations emitted by the 5G, is non-ionised, hence, are safe to humans.
The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami had, also, assured Nigerians that, no licence has been issued, for the deployment of 5G, anywhere in Nigeria.
MTN-sponsored tests on the 5G network were, however, carried out in Abuja, Calabar and Lagos, sometime in December 2019, I readiness for the full deployment.
The 5G network is said, to be capable making internet connectivity faster, enable faster downloads, as well as enable us carry out many activities around the Internet of Things and Artificial Intelligence, among other things.
It is hoped that, the probe, of the 5G network, by the Senate, will, finally, resolve the issues surrounding the linking of the 5G network to the corona virus, ravaging the world, at the moment.
