Legal Lens a South African-based startup is supporting individuals, companies and other entities in reducing inflated legal fees.
The startup claims it is able to minimize legal fees by an average of 10 percent.
Yusha Davidson and Catherine-Jane Paulse who are both attorneys launched the startup in November 2020 to enable users to send legal invoices, fee arrangements correspondence and engagement letters with the lawyer.
The founders both came up with the idea when they discovered that error and billing practices on legal invoices result in a clear disadvantage to clients, a result that leads to high legal fees.
By employing machine learning and optical character recognition with the aid of experienced attorneys, the startup reviews the legal invoices to determine where potential savings can be extracted.
Legal Lens then goes ahead to make a negotiation with the customer’s lawyer as regards the legal fee.
On completion of the renegotiation, Legal Lens receives a new invoice that shows a reduction in the legal fee for their customer.
While doing this, the startup ensures that a healthy relationship is still maintained between the legal firm and the customer.
The clients are charged 17.5 percent of the legal fee saved, however, if no savings are made, the startup doesn’t charge.
Catherine-Jane Paulse commented: “The recent discussion paper by the South African Law Reform Commission regarding its investigation into legal fees also confirms that improper and unethical billing is a reality in South Africa,”
Davidson on his part explained that clients in saving their relationship with their lawyers, do not or too afraid to review their legal invoices. Though most of them lack the knowledge to engage in a legal dispute.
“Clients are unable or reluctant to review legal invoices due to the administrative nature of the task, a lack of understanding of what constitutes a justifiable basis to seek a reduction, and a fear of jeopardizing the close relationship with their attorney.
Legal Lens disrupts the status quo of inflated legal fees by utilizing experienced attorneys, artificial intelligence and machine learning to review and reduce legal invoices by up to 60%.”
Realizing that the process, would be time-consuming, both founders developed a solution that reviews and reduce legal fees.
The startup offers its services to individuals, companies and state entities who need their legal bills reviewed.
