The internet has always had a dark side where illegal and illicit activities take place and some of the world’s renowned hackers use the platform to make deals.
These hackers engage in selling and buying goods as well as providing services but according to the International Police, the dark web is no longer safe for cybercriminals moving forward.
The international police made this assertion, following a well-coordinated move called “Operation Disruptor“, they have been able to take down and expose 179 people who thrive using the illegal platform.
The team of police also stated that this operation will successfully reduce and end the golden age of the dark web.
This team of police and law enforcement agencies comprises the Federal Criminal Police, Germany; National Police, Holland; National Crime Agency, United Kingdom; Department of Justice, FBI, United State; Europol, among others.
Here is a break down of the total 179 arrests made by the law enforcement agency:
- United States – 121 arrested
- Germany – 42 hackers arrested
- Holland – 8 arrested
- United Kingdom – 4 arrested
- Austria – 3 arrested
- Sweden – 1 hacker nabbed
According to the official statement released by the International Police stated:
“Operation Disruptor highlights the capability of law enforcement to counter encryption and anonymity of dark web marketplaces that poses threat.
Criminals involved in the buying and selling illegal goods through the dark web will be chase down and nabbed,”
Also speaking on this development is Edvardas Šileris head of Europol’s European Cybercrime Centre (EC3) stated:
“Law enforcement is most effective when working together, and this announcement has sent a strong message to criminals/hackers who sell, buy and provides illicit goods and services on the dark web.”
“The dark web is crack, and anonymous activity is not anonymous, you will be track down and arrested”. Šileris concluded.
