Following the success of the GSMA Innovation Fund 2020 that saw 9 startups across Asia and Africa received award grants.
The 2021 innovation fund has recently opened applications for startups in the same region.
2020 past winners from the Africa region include ScholarX (Nigeria), Africa118 (Ethiopia), WildEnergy Africa (Zambia), Zonful Energy (Zimbabwe), and Ensibuuko (Uganda).
The GSMA Innovation Fund 2021 seeks startups offering digital urban services in Africa, Southeast, and South Asia. Their solutions must come with commercial, socio-economic, and environmental impacts.
The GSMA Innovation Fund for Digital Urban Services has been running since 2018 while targeting startups using digital solutions in the energy and sanitation, water, plastic, and waste management sectors.
Startups with proven successful projects are set to receive an equity-free grant between US$ 140,000 and US$ 350,000 in scaling their innovation in a period of 18 months.
With city authorities struggling to meet up the demands of an increased population, the innovation fund seeks to address challenges to basic service provision.
The innovation fund will assist startups to scale their digital solutions for developing underserved populations in Africa, Southeast and South Asia.
