One of the major challenges plaguing the African economic growth is unemployment and Nigeria is no exception. Various universities in the country continue to churn out graduates by the thousands into a fiercely competitive labor force.
To curb this problem, much emphasis is laid on skills acquisition and entrepreneurial training. A good number of higher institutions of learning in Nigeria have incorporated these into their curriculum, equipping students to thrive upon graduation.
One initiative that also addresses the issue of unemployment is Unilever’s IdeaTrophy.
About Unilever’s IdeaTrophy
Idea Trophy, in line with Unilever’s global youth employability initiative (Future Leaders League), has enabled Unilever to contribute to the improvement of knowledge in the upcoming generation.
This youth-focused program is designed to expose students from different institutions to real-life business experiences in a creative, but challenging environment. Through it, they get to understand how businesses work, developing their own skills, and competencies at the same time.
How does it work?
The initiative operates as a competition for undergraduates in teams of 3, giving them the needed exposure to business challenges, mentorship from experienced business leaders, and problem-solving frameworks.
One leading product of Unilever is selected as the focus of IdeaTrophy, and participants are challenged to proffer a solution for an actual problem facing that brand.
This year’s winners and finalists would go on to represent Nigeria virtually at the Africa IdeaTrophy as well as at the global level’s Future leaders League competition.
