In a keynote presentation at the 2021 National Conference Exhibition in Abuja, Prof. Umar Garba Danbatta, the EVC of NCC stated that plans to address the telecoms infrastructure deficit are already in place.
He further stressed that the deployment of telecoms infrastructure across rural communities in Nigeria sits at the heart of every of government charged with bringing about socio-economic development.
Speaking at the conference themed “EXPANSION OF THE ENERGY MIX FOR NATIONAL ECONOMIC GROWTH,” Danbatta focused on the Strategic Collaboration between the Gown and Town for Effective Rural Development.
The NCC CEO made t known that the vision of the Federal Government as enunciated in the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy (2020-2030), Economic Recovery and Growth Plan (ERGP) and the National Broadband Plan (2020-2025) is being vigorously implemented.
Explaining the relation between NCC’s operations and these policies, Danbatta said that the NCC’s Strategic Management Plan (SMP) 2020-2024, aligns with the vision of the Federal Government for an all-inclusive digital economy which would enhance regulatory and operational efficiency.
Accordingly, Danbatta reiterated that the NCC has split into 7 zones in order to improve the broadband infrastructure in Nigeria. These seven zones include the 6 constitutional geopolitical divisions with Lagos constituting the seventh.
The NCC CEO is quoted in a statement saying: “The NCC has licenced companies for each of the seven zones, in a bid to implement broadband infrastructure that will guarantee speed of up to 25 megabits per second in the rural areas.
An access point of at least 10 mb per second will be provided for all 774 LGAs of Nigeria will have an initial access point of at least 10 megabits per second.”
Licensed companies have been asked to move to the site to demonstrate NCC’s readiness to go at the same pace as the Government as stated in the policy documents, he added.
